Philip IV's Instruments of Power

The focus of the 2-day conference is Philip IV, "el Rey Planeta", and while papers may touch on any aspect of Philip IV's reign, some suggested topics include the "decline" of the Spanish empire;  Kingship and favouritism; Spain, the Two Sicilies and colonialism; Philip IV and the New World; royal power and its expression through art, architecture and literature (from Velazquez and El Escorial to modern novels and films); the interplay of political and religious discourse.
